Incisionless Relief For Essential Tremor

What is Focused Ultrasound for Essential Tremor?

Focused ultrasound for essential tremor is an FDA-approved, non-invasive procedure that’s transforming patient care. The procedure uses ultrasound waves to target the specific areas of the brain responsible for tremors. Guided by MRI, the soundwaves pass safely through the skull and soft tissues to focus heat on only the targeted area, providing relief from symptoms. With no surgical cuts or permanent implants necessary, there is minimal to no risk of infection, and the treatment is often performed on an outpatient basis. Many patients can expect to resume normal activities within days. OU Health is proud to be the first in Oklahoma to offer this revolutionary treatment.

See If Treatment Is Right for You

If you suffer from essential tremor, you know how debilitating it can be. Daily activities like eating, drinking, and writing can become a challenge. However, if you have a confirmed diagnosis of essential tremor that has been unresponsive to medications, this treatment option could be for you. Start by scheduling an appointment to talk to us. To determine if you are a candidate, our team will evaluate your overall health and the severity of your tremor. Patients will also need to undergo a CT scan as part of the evaluation. From there, you will work closely with your medical team to begin treatment planning and preparation.

Process

Understanding the Treatment Timeline

What Happens Before, During, and After the Procedure?

Before the procedure, patients who have been evaluated as candidates for focused ultrasound will work with their medical team to understand their treatment timeline. There is little preparation required; however, patients will need a cleanly shaven head to minimize the interference of sound waves. A local numbing medication will then be applied to the areas involved. You may also be given additional medication to improve your comfort.

Along with an MRI, your doctor will begin by first applying light doses of ultrasound energy to identify the precise spot in the brain for treatment. After each application of energy, called a sonication, you will be asked to perform specific tasks such as touching your nose to evaluate your tremor improvement. The treating physician will then gradually increase the energy to create a small lesion, usually resulting in improvement of hand tremors. Many patients report immediate improvements during the treatment itself. Your heart rate, blood pressure and blood oxygen levels will be monitored throughout the treatment which typically lasts 2.5 hours.

After treatment, you will move to the recovery room. The physician will let you know when you can go home and when you will need to return for a follow-up visit. Within days, you should be able to return to normal activities.
